Lynx HySnow

BRP-Rotax’ first snowmobile with a hydrogen fuel cell

With the introduction of the Lynx HySnow in February 2020, Rotax takes a big step towards the future. The Lynx HySnow is the first snowmobile in the world to run emissions-free, with an electric powertrain combined with a fuel cell. This highly innovative beacon project means BRP-Rotax will continue to set the pace for the entire sector into the future. The Lynx HySnow is introduced at the 2020 FIS FIS Ski World Cup in Hinterstoder (Austria).

INNOVATIVE POWERTRAINS AS BRAND NAMES

The Lynx HySnow is based around the Lynx 69 Ranger Alpine. The vehicle has been completely refitted and given a high-quality electric powertrain complete with a hydrogen fuel cell. In linking e-mobility and hydrogen, the Lynx HySnow is not only a flagship project for sustainability, it also has many other benefits. Its innovative powertrain system means the new vehicle runs almost silently regardless of temperature fluctuations and is able to operate over a greater range and achieve faster acceleration than conventional electric drives.

ENERGY SELF-SUFFICIENCY

Together with project partners, Rotax has not only developed the Lynx HySnow, it has also constructed an integrated hydrogen ecosystem and filling station. Hydrogen is an innovative energy source and works in conjunction with a fuel cell to provide electrical energy. The electricity for the electrolysis required to produce hydrogen on site is supplied by a photovoltaic plant. BRP-Rotax is thus presenting an energy self-sufficient solution that will contribute to the decarbonization of winter tourism.

THE HYDROGEN REVOLUTION

“2020 is a very special year for us. We’re not only celebrating 100 years of innovation and leadership in engine development and manufacture, we’re also developing other new technologies and starting a real hydrogen revolution for the new decade. Using this renewable energy source means we are ushering in a new age for Rotax and expanding our options with an eye to the future.” Dr. Wolfgang Rapberger, GM BRP-Rotax / Representative of the Management Board
